THE VOYAGE

Ecuador is a country that contrasts between its jungle rich in flora and fauna, and its snowy high summits. On this trip, you will encounter these two worlds that are inhabited by local populations who knew how to adapt to and interact with their environment. We’ll discover these different cultures and populations (in a pedagogical and playful manner) who will share their passions and concerns with us. A cultural and athletic adventure awaits us!

This trip will be a golden opportunity to climb two of the most beautiful mountains in South America – the Cotopaxi and the Cayambe. This adventure that merges cultural gatherings and mountain climbing will have us visiting Latin America’s largest crafts market and climbing mountains over 4,000 m in altitude! There will also be traditional agricultural villages that will open their hearts (and doors) to us.

TRANSPORTATION

All transportation will be a mix of private vehicle. We will take 4×4 Jeeps to the refugees (Cayambe and Cotopaxi) and to Pinan.

ACCOMMODATIONS

We will stay in refuges and guesthouses for the majority of our trip. We will have the chance to stay with our local partners who treat you just like family! In Quito, Otavalo, and Riobambo, we will sleep in 3-star hotels. Four nights in refuge will be spending at the foot of Cayambe and Cotopaxi.

EATING & DRINKING

All meals during climbs, hikes, or when travelling by minibus, will be provided by Terra Ultima. We are mindful of the quality of our meals as they help ensure enjoyment on the rest of the trip! For meals in the city, we will offer the best meals available.

WEATHER

You will experience the four seasons during your two-week stay in Ecuador, these conditions vary from one valley to another. There is a lot of rain throughout the year, except for certain periods (like between March and June and November and December). Nights spent camping ahead of mountain hikes can be cold. The annual average throughout the country is 0C to 30C, depending on altitude.

CASH AND CURRENCY

The Ecuadorian currency is the American dollar. ATMs can be found throughout Quito. It is preferable that you get American dollars before your departure for security reasons and to avoid incurring bank fees. For the rest of the circuit, it is better not to expect that you will have access to money. We encourage you to exchange your money in advance in order to have a successful trip.

TIPPING

This is at your discretion but please consider this information as indicative of the norm in the travel sector. Each traveller should put aside $5 per day towards their Terra Ultima tour guide. That said, this fee can be increased based on your appreciation!

TRAVEL INSURANCE

As you will be supplied with spikes and an ice axe during this trip, you must subscribe to an insurance that covers mountaineering. Contact us to learn more about specialized insurance.

The YDS divides trails into 5 classes:
• Class 1 : Walking
• Class 2 : Possible use of hands for stability
• Class 3 : Easy climbing with some exposure. A rope is sometimes used.
• Class 4 : Easy climb with exposure. A rope is often used.
• Class 5 : Free climbing technique
N.B. – Mountaineering insurance is generally required from Grade 3 and/or from 6 000 m of altitude.

VISAS/FORMALITIES

Visas are not required for Canadians travelling to Ecuador for less than 90 days. However, your passport must be valid for six months beyond your departure date.

HEALTH, VACCINATION AND SAFETY

We encourage you to consult a traveller`s clinic or your local health department to learn more about the vaccines required in different travel regions.

ELECTRICITY AND INTERNET

Ecuador uses 110V/60Hz plugs. Consult the following website (https://www.power-plugs-sockets.com/) to see different types of plugs. Internet access is generally accessible in Ecuador. Wi-Fi is also available in the majority of hotels and in certain restaurants, though prices vary.

EQUIPMENT AND LUGGAGE

All you need to carry is a day bag large enough to hold what you need to get through the day. This will be the bag that you will carry with you and that you may use on the plane. This bag can be either a backpack (whether with handles or wheels) or a duffel bag. Hard shell suitcases (especially large ones) are not recommended, as they are not practical for storage on smaller transport vehicles, like minibuses. Don’t forget to label all your bags with your name and address.

A complete list of equipment will be given upon registration for the trip (See the appendix).
